I watched ilayaraja’s concert recently in Jaya TV and just bowled over by his talent. I have always been a big fan of him from my childhood. He is one man who does authentic music composition and perfectly fits to the title called ‘Music Director’. When director Balki was called on stage to talk a few words about him he recited how he prepares background score by hearing a scene. He adds life to the scene by getting the narration from the director and then tunes himself to give the perfect tune by directing the music. No wonder his background scores are so good as he gets into the nitty gritty details.
He relies on actual instruments which bring out sounds and also ‘n’ number of people to play the instruments to get the appropriate tune. Now that is a creative work – we have three things over here – No.1 is the actual scene or song in the narration of the film; No.2 is the lyrics which at times may be ready before a tune is ready; No.3 is you have instruments and people to get the desired music. To blend all of these and give it in a way that we all enjoy is a real magic. Software creates music by some sort of algorithm but does not have the sixth sense to predict the emotions instead throws out music by mixing whatever it has in its repository.
I always used to wonder why does he not do lot of concerts and do world tours by that way people will enjoy his music. It took me a while but think now I got the answer. Every sponsor wants to make big bucks – with Ilayaraja’s concerts you can still make lot of money but the Profit margin can be low as he needs lots of people which in turn take lot of money to get visas, lodging, food and other expenditures. Also he needs lot of instruments to get the correct sound which in turn may take lots of money for baggage. I earnestly hope he does worldwide tours by that way people like me can enjoy his music.
I like AR Rahman too and he is the pride of our nation. But I esteem Raja sir’s music very much. Awards are given by individuals and jury members and no matter what the award is I deem there is lot of factors goes into deciding who needs to get a particular award. Raja’s sir music can be matched to any music in International standards and if he did not receive any award the award is not lucky enough. His music has a big fan following and I don’t think any award can give him more happiness than people’s admiration for his music.
I consider to be blessed to hear his music and I cannot keep count of how many of my car commutes, flight travels and road trips I enjoyed his music. His background scores for ‘Mouvna Raagam’ will always remain close to my heart. I wish him lots of good health, joy and happiness and wish he keeps entertaining us with his lovely music …..

Reality Shows ....
Reality shows have become so popular these days that every television is trying to come up with creative shows on prime times. By having more Reality shows they are bringing in the actual public and giving them the opportunity to exhibit their talents. This in turn draws lot of people because everyone wants to exhibit their talents on the bigger stage. Television wants to cash on this by having public votes and other gimmicks to have public watch these programs to spawn more revenues. There are both good and bad things about these and goods things first – gives the common man to showcase his/her talents, opens doors to get into something big like opportunities to sing in Tamil movie, gives a chance to meet bigwigs which they have always admired etc.,
I am at times not comfortable with the way television paint the whole picture. Anchors saying time and again “40 lakhs to win a big home”, “Opportunity to sing under so and so” etc., concerns me as I believe this is where it gets diluted. No matter one is a chain smoker but the very first time when he took a puff that’s where it all started; same in the case of a drinker the very first time he took a sip that’s where it got started. So I believe there is a chance that these big prizes and alluring package can make things diluted and one starts to chase money and eminence losing sight of the actual passion. Channels they got to make a program really interesting by making more eyes watch the program so they will go to the extent of adding lot of commercial elements and as participants people especially kids and youth have to be matured enough to handle.
I am sure the parents will take care of the kids but this is kind of drug which is injected into everyone’s body – they have been normal citizens so far and all of a sudden name and fame made them popular overnight. They are recognized everywhere they go and they are centre of attraction everywhere. When they enjoy this period and suddenly face a downward slope if people are matured enough then they will take it sportively else they will really be thrown aback since they could not accept the sudden change that ensued to them.
But Reality shows are good because new talents are identified and recognized. Just that people have to be careful in handling name and fame. A kid who is 10 years old may not even know how many zeros are there for 40 lakhs. As always good and bad are there in every damn thing and we have to pick and choose – ‘Eat the fruit and throw the seed because seeds are hidden inside the fruit”

General checkups
We persistently monitor our laptop and we make sure we shield against any virus prevailing around. We also spend lots of money on decorating our house …..we even love to do some fancy stuff for our cars …but how many of us do General checkups @ regular intervals? I feel so bad that I had to wait all the way long till I had to marry a doctor for me to realize the importance of checkups. What is the use of studies when we behave like an illiterate? If people like me do not realize how are we going to convey this message to people who don’t have the ability to read/write …
General checkup is nothing disquieting..just an alert to make sure you are doing okay. For some reason most of us ignore lot of the things when it comes to Health. Sluggishness is no.1 in the list when it comes to these bad practices. Doing a general checkup may not take more than an hour yet we feel we do not have time to do this routine.
People have to change the mentality sometimes …I had a chance to interact with one of leading India’s Pulmonologist who also happens to be my cousin brother. There was lot of topics we discussed and one thing we noticed was people’s mentality. They believe spending 400 rupees for a checkup or a doctor visit is waste of money and immediately start to grumble about doctors. Patients should NOT expect a commodity or merchandise when they visit a doctor ..all they can receive is consultation tips and advice on the next steps …To diagnose a specific symptom a doctor has to bring all his expertise and experience to advice the patient. People try to act smart by reading from Internet and come up with some questions. All they got to understand is doctors are well aware that patients are well equipped with lot of information from various different sources. People believe they are saving money and are ending up on the losing side.
Steve jobs had all the money in the world ..but he was stuck with Pancreatic cancer which people believe one of its kind. I am not saying Jobs did not took care of his health but what I am trying to say is “If there is no health then all what you possess becomes of no value”. In this competitive world people get new diseases because of the lifestyle and other factors and on the other side plenty of work going on R&D in the field of Medicine to improve people’s life. Whatever it is the first step should be to do a general checkup on regular basis and insist the importance to our near and dear ones.

Wonderful feeling ...
Somethings can only be felt ..we cannot do justice by words or ink ….One such thing happened to me in recent past. My office was moving its location so I was busy cleaning my desk and packing everything and gearing up to move to our new office. Because I leave late every evening I get to meet this janitor (should be a Mexican) almost every day and just wish him ‘Hi’ …I was asking him whether he is going to serve our new office too ….He replied saying “No …..” suddenly I realized I may no longer see this guy. I just said “Thank you very much for all your work” ….he said ‘No problem’ and was smiling …..Well I realized both of us don’t know what to say and I left the place saying ‘Bye’ ….On my way back while I was driving back home I was cherishing of what little I did a while ago by saying ‘Thank you’.
When someone wishes us ‘Thank you’ it feels so nice because they are thoughtful and you wonder how sweet they are. Thanking someone has to come from heart and not from lips …it’s is very easy to figure that out ..at least for me ….such a materialistic world we live in …everything happens like a 2 minute noodles…human bonding is an true art by itself ….some of us thank right away because we cannot keep anything within ourselves …some are tight lipped and convey our feelings after a while ago ….some though our mind says something we follow something …..It does not necessarily mean one who wishes is good and ones who do not are bad ….
When I was a child I used to wonder what is ‘screenplay’ when the film title used to roll …I understood the terms ‘story’, ‘dialogue’, ‘direction’ but ‘Screenplay’ was one word which always keep wondering …Now I enjoy ‘Screenplay writing’ and in fact my big passion …so what it is? It is nothing but placing appropriate things at appropriate places to get the appropriate mood ….I believe almighty is the biggest screenplay writers in this world ….how many screenplay writing he got to do considering the number of humans he got to deal in this universe . The more human we are by emoting few things like ‘Wishing Thanks’, ‘Appreciating ones efforts’, ‘Encouraging people’, etc., it makes the screenplay writing very easier for the almighty …I hope you are able to connect my little screenplay over here ….

Power of Book reading
A settled or regular penchant or practice is called a ‘Habit’; As we grow up we nurture lot of habits – going to the gym in the morning, going to the temple during weekends etc., I have heard that recording the happenings in one’s diary each day before going to sleep to be one of the greatest habits one can possess. I am going to succinct about another simple yet powerful habit ‘Book reading’. I want to write this article to all my friends to share this habit which can eventually transform their minds and take them to newer levels in their lives.
As with every other thing the beginning is always tough. In fact I remember the first book I was trying to read I had all sorts of thoughts running through my mind. Only when I read a book I would reminisce ‘Dhoni smashing a sixer’, ‘Punch dialogue from Thalaivar’, ‘Curd rice served in Shiva Vishnu temple’ ..basically mind is distracted. I tried a lot and before I read five pages I will automatically slumber. At times I even just used to read mechanically without bothering to understand the content because my goal was to complete reading one book outside academics.
Eventually I completed though it took long still I was happy I completed one book. I gained little confidence and decided to read a book where I can relate to the contents so I chose to read “My Name is Rajinikanth”..all my roomies were laughing loud that I picked this book but that decision proved to be a blessing as I was able to read the book pretty fast. So bottom line if you are new to book reading choose a book where you can relate to the content.
Ok so what does Book reading really do? How does it help? How do we get inspired? According to me experiences are new to individuals but not to the world. Whatever one experiences in his/her life (Happiness, struggles, Gains, losses, adventures etc.,) can be new to that individual but it is never a new experience to this world. Meaning one must have already faced the same situation before. So book is a medium which can teach you your future or act as a guide how to react to such situations in future. It will make you think wise and can transform your mind. It just depends on how cleverly you choose the book.
A big word of caution while choosing which books to read. I have heard people being so religious and after reading a book they totally stopped worshipping. Books are so powerful that they can just make you take a ‘U Turn’. Pick the books on the subjects you enjoy. Biographies/autobiographies can be a good starting point.
These days book reading have become very comfortable through Kindle and Ipads. Thanks to technology. Cultivate this habit early in your childwood and you will see the true difference in the way you talk and approach your life. People may make fun initially that you are an erudite guy and then may make fun that you never practice what you read; Just remain silent and continue your work and soon you will find the same people will start appreciating you.

Housewives aka Home makers

If everyone wants to work inside the building then who will build the building? Housewives are alarmingly becoming fewer in number thanks to IT jobs. This drift may continue in future as we face a very competitive ambiance. This article is dedicated to all current Home makers and future house wives ……
First and foremost the boundary line cannot be drawn for a House wife saying these are the duties they are responsible for. Activities like gardening, commemorating small functions like chitra pournami, spending more time with the kids, organizing social activities which play an imperative role in maintaining the bonding between nearest and dearest ones. etc., are all part of their regular life. These are apart from the copious tasks they do on a daily basis.
One thing in favor of the house wives is ‘Time’. If this is utilized in an efficient manner then they are right on track. They have all the time in the world to do lot of activities which their counterparts can only do on weekends. Home makers have the luxury to cherish small things. They can in fact sense how fast the nails grow for their kids on a daily basis, make a garland and offer to deity on a daily basis, enjoy talking to family back home on daily basis etc.,
Now the most crucial factor – “Financial needs” the reason why most of the girls want to work apart from being independent and to keep themselves busy. Though this is a debatable topic I have tried to be as realistic as possible by quoting incidents such as (1) Buying a property in suburb versus buying in a main locality (2) Driving Odyssey/Sienna instead of MDX/RX (3) Watching Rajini movie on 2nd week instead of first weekend
House wives may not have fancy titles to their name, may not see rush hour traffic, may not deal with conference calls but act as a fulcrum in which the whole family relies on. To all the husbands – your Wife/Mom/Sister may be a Doctor, Engineer or a Lawyer but feel proud that they are “House wife” as it is a ‘Blessing’.

"Mood out"
Scene 1: It's your bday ...you are making sure your car is keeping pace with your oomph level and you drive fast to reach a temple near your place ....Out of the blue you see cop behind you and hands over 150$ fine .....
Scene 2: Its pooja time .....you are about to break coconut so that you can use for Pooja. how many indian stores sell good coconut ? result the coconut is spoilt and you cannot use it ....
Scene 3: You are about to leave for a function ...after all the impediment finally everybody gets into the car .....you drive for a mile and then you see this fat small cat crossing your car ...
Scene 4: You are keyed up as bunch of guests is about to arrive your place .....you are preparing milk dessert for them to taste. much to your dismay since milk is spoilt the dessert taste very bad ....
Well any one or two of the above situations may have happened to you. So why do these happen and make us dull or basically "Mood out" ......well we all know sachin is a wonderful gift we indians have ...but as a captain he didn't enjoy success ....
i remember always when he comes for the after match presentation he says these words
" When things go your way everything seems to go your way ....when things doesn't seem to go your way everything is against you" ......it took me a while to understand what he meant ....
I believe these incidents do happen and may continue to happen ...sometimes it may be our fault and sometimes it may be beyond our control ....so how do we tackle this? what is the remedy when we face situations like this .....???
well I believe we should be mentally prepared ...basically take it in the lighter vein ....this small step can make a big difference when this actually happens.

True friends and just friends ......
"A true friend is one who is with you during troubled times"
How many times we must have heard this Cliche statement but how true it is ......
We are living in a society where everyone is busy busy ...no body has time to value and cherish human relationships ......competition is hectic and people has to run always. At times even jogging is not permitted ...
If someone close to us is suffering from an illness/Fever we either make it a point to call or go and see him on a weekend ....but it doesn't strike us to know what is the extent is he/she suffering.
Knowing the film is bad we make sure we book bulk tickets and go as a gang and enjoy the stupid movie. But knowing its a good thing have we ever make it a point to volunteer the 'n' number of organizations near our community .....
Relationships based on "mutual benefits" is increasingly become more and more and thus overlooking many small things within the wonderful art of human relationships.
We being so busy is naturally because of the fierce competition. If our friend/colleague gets a X-box we tend to get PS3.
Just as T-20 has commercialized everything and thus brought the number of test matches played friendships based on "Mutual benefits" is alarmingly becoming more and more. Personally I believe Human relationships is an "Art" and there is much more in this art and hopefully everyone including me start enjoying it.

Small things make life Wonderful
"Great things are done by a series of small things brought together."
-- Vincent Van Gogh
I always cherish small things and that’s the reason I sometimes embellish when I comment on something …but what is life without excitement and bit of fantasy….
How many of us enjoy a cup of hot tea standing in the balcony, enjoy a ride in the car with moon roof open, smile when we iron the shirt perfectly for the first time, beam when the queue in grocery store billing counter is less, enjoy the final layer sticking in the vessel in a chicken biriyani, enjoy the smell emanating after the rain, relish when somebody wishes you “Good Morning” when you have no clue who the other person is , enjoy the making of the film even after the film is over and titles start rolling, feel sigh of relief when our desi aunties has left at least some good lady’s fingers after breaking the tip of most in an Indian store ..etc ., the list goes on and on ….I personally enjoy all of these except the last one since I feel our aunties can show some pity on the bachelors…he he ..
We feel very blissful when dollar exceeds 50 rupees forgetting that our roots are from India (no showoff I also do this), very happy when Citi exceeds our credit limit or offers a good balance transfer deal, very happy when India wins the trophy …..no harm in enjoying all these as these would really swift gears and make you smile. The only thing is why don’t we give some if not equal importance to the small things ……I personally believe one who enjoys small things will always have a smile in their face …..
Also many of us in this modern era get restless very often …..if we see we don’t get parking lot near the doorstep of a store we gently scold shoppers ….the moment our internet starts to buffer at regular intervals we immediately say “why is internet very slow today?” without realizing all of our roomies are streaming a dvd version of a movie, scold our own driving skills missing the traffic signal by arriving a few nanoseconds late. I myself do all of these and that’s the problem with everybody these days. We get restless very often as we need everything very soon.
I wanted to write this blog to say to myself and to anyone who reads this blog to enjoy small things in life and not to get restless for petty things. This is not an advice just a message from your friend. Live life to the fullest and enjoy every bit of it as it is a gift from god.

Jai ho AR Rahman ji
Well it’s been some time since ARR won the coveted Oscar award ….I wanted to write a blog right away as I thought that would be my way of expressing happiness …life these days are so saccharine that I don’t even find time to convert my rough drafts to actual blogs …..well it was a bit cold Sunday evening when several of us assembled in one of our friend’s house to see the award ceremony …never in my life I have watched an Oscar show ..that too ‘live’ on television ……when the number slowly began to increase we decided lets munch something which we are pretty good at. It was decided Samosa would be the dish and on top of this rasamillai was on the way ….that was perfect and ceremony began ...we all were excited to see whether media would catch ARR among the crowd to say a few words …to be frank all of us were watching as if India were playing Pakistan against a world cup finals ….the ambience was bit tensed and only noise was from the people who were preparing samosa ....
Slowly awards were given for each category ...for every award Slumdog millionaire won we were whistling and bustling ...Slumdog millionaire was a film based on India but actually taken by British guy …many technicians were also outside India …but still since the movie was picturised in India we get a feeling its totally an Indian film …..when the nominations were announced under music category I just saw some of my friends and pondered whether they need a nail cutter for the coming months ….and finally ARR’s name was announced and all of us were on our feet just racketing and expressing our happiness ..and when ARR spoke in thaimouli Tamil …I personally was moved and just felt like removing my shirt like how dada did back in lord’s ……thank god due to members from my opposite gender was controlling my emotions …..and to add icing in the cake ARR got the second award and also performed on stage …that was truly a magic moment ….a moment to relish for every Indian and Tamizhan ....we all were also happy that none of the neighbours complained as the sound coming out from the room must have been lot of decibels ....
We personally know ARR for a long time ….we have listened to far better songs than the ones he composed for SM ….he himself accepted that he composed music for the entire film within 3 weeks of time ….his songs from his maiden venture is still hummable ……As a brand he has terrific track record in making his songs a super hit …..also one has to confess he approached right channels and his name crossed Indian borders due to the directors and people he worked with. Myself being a very big fan of Raja sir felt bit disappointed why he did not win any Oscars ….the sound coming from his composition is unique and as many he does not rely on software …he uses number of instruments and always has numerous people playing it just to get a kind of music he wants ….not being a technical savvy in music I do not know how to explain it …but one thing for sure Rajs sir’s music is always exquisite…Bollywood is a major place to put your name in Global map as the reach is much wider ….but that said ARR has to be appreciated and congratulated for bring home two Oscars and making every Indian and tamizhan proud …..as I read lot of biographies I have seen this quality among great men ….that they are ‘modest’ I don’t know to put it in which voice (active/passive) whether ‘great men are always modest’ ..or ‘modest men are always great’.
What this would mean to Indian music or Indian films on a whole ……this would definitely bridge the gap between west and east ..and also faucet many such talents and many would get exposed to the global arena …..Indian talent will be looked upon with great respect ….Since India always stands for cheap labor Hollywood may gauge this and the logistics may change slightly if not much and ARR will be remembered when all of this happen as he is the man who started the whole new show ...we also wish him and his three daughters to carry the torch for the coming generations ...
Thank you ARR ....
